NFDI4Objects Conservation Data Framework Online-Portal

This online portal serves as a reference guide for the conceptual models contained within the Conservation Data Framework (CDF for short). The Conservation Data Framework is a community-driven, open reference framework for the standardised, semantically interoperable collection and curation of conservation and restoration data. The CDF online portal serves, alongside formal publications, as a flexible reference environment and handbook for the latest published versions of the three concepts.

Background & Objective​

Documenting conservation measures is essential for the long-term preservation and scholarly study of cultural heritage. At the same time, there has so far been no broadly agreed, machine-readable standard for this kind of documentation. Within NFDI4Objects, this gap is being addressed by Task Area 4 "Protecting" through the development of the Conservation Data Framework. The framework provides users with a foundation for semantic modelling of conservation documentation, from initial recording through to interoperable use in research, collection and long-term archiving contexts. As an open, versioned, community-maintained framework, the CDF lowers the barrier to standards-compliant documentation in digital space and helps conservators make their data usable, interoperable, and citable in the long term.

The aim is:

  • to enable data to be compared across institutions,
  • to support long-term archiving,
  • to promote the interdisciplinary interoperability and connectivity of conservation data,
  • to support open scientific practices

Work process​

The framework is beeing developed in a transparent and participatory manner within the Temporary Working Group (TWG) Community standards for controlled vocabularies and exchange formats in the field of cultural heritage conservation in constant dialogue with the wider community, for example in the Community Cluster (CC) Consersation Science as well as at events.
