Whilst the chapters Sections and Metadata Elements set out the practical structure of the schema, this section documents its conceptual framework. It supplements the structured presentation of the schema with background information on its objectives, the development process and the underlying modelling decisions. Reading this section is not strictly necessary for the practical application of the schema.

An overview of the schema’s development, the specialised reference frameworks taken into account, and the iterative development process involving the community.
Conceptual Foundations
A concise introduction to key concepts such as:
- FAIR principles
- Metadata and metadata schemas
- Controlled vocabularies
- Unique identifiers
as well as a basic glossary of important terms.
This section provides a common conceptual framework and facilitates an understanding of the structural decisions made in the schema.
