Condition assessment Mandatory
Purpose and function of the section
The condition assessment documents the physical condition of the object at a specific point in time. It forms the basis for all conservation and restoration decisions. The section has been developed in line with event-based modelling, with a focus on documenting the practical actions carried out and the observations made in the process. This allows the same structure to be used for different assessment points in time, i.e. for recording the object’s condition prior to conservation (pre-conservation condition), during conservation (interim condition) and after measures have been carried out (final condition), as well as in the context of routine monitoring activities. The entire section can be repeated for this purpose, with the specific assessment point in time (in relation to the conservation measure carried out) to be indicated in each instance. This flexibility reflects actual conservation practice, in which condition assessments take place at different points in time and must be documented. At the same time, it facilitates consistent recording across these different points in time.
The section as a whole is mandatory, as it provides the fundamental basis for conservation and restoration decisions. A structured condition assessment enables long-term studies of changes in condition as well as the evaluation of the success of conservation measures carried out.
