Sampling Conditional

Purpose and function of the section

The ‘Sampling’ section documents the collection of samples from the object or its surroundings. Samples may be taken for planned (scientific) analysis (e.g. material identification, dating) or as a preventative measure to safeguard material from irreversible treatment procedures. This section is modelled on an event-based approach, i.e. it records each sampling as a separate event with associated contextual information (Who? When? Where? How?). Multiple samplings can be documented chronologically by repeating the entire section.

This section is conditionally mandatory: it forms part of the documentation only if samples were actually taken as part of the conservation and restoration work. The documentation of sampling is important for classifying marks or changes to the object resulting from the sampling, as well as for ensuring the traceability of analysis results.
